Clamp
Book reading Lamp to read in comfort
Under the guidance of Ashish Thulkar
Introduction
Clamp is a versatile book reading lamp designed to be attached to a book or held in hand for nighttime reading. Its standout feature is the automatic and gradual adjustment of light brightness, ensuring optimal comfort while reading. Users also have the option to manually adjust the light according to their preference, making it a customizable and user-friendly reading companion.
Problem statement
Reading books at night causes stress to eyes as our pupils slowly adjust in dark and the light which was dim earlier becomes too bright.
Design Brief
How might we create a lamp which adjusts the light in proportion to pupils dilation allowing user to comfortably read books in dark before bedtime.
Principal functions
Providing Sufficient light to read.
Adjusting the light to comfort eyes.
Using Light as a timer to allow user to slowly fall asleep.

Component packaging and design

The first design was using a bigger cell which required a larger PCB.

Final PCB Design allowed to put batteries through the PCB and LEDs are on a separate PCB so the empty space below the main PCB can be used.

New Design uses 3 LR41 cells making design more compact. the knob and push button is under the same interface reducing parts required. clip is made of ABS Plastic allowing a little bit of flexibility and the arm is made of Silicon rubber.
Finding correct form factor while packing component with balance to both functionality of product and manufacturability was important.

Conclusion
The clip used to attach the lamp to a book needs to be more flexible. Additionally, the high cost and limited availability of button cells have prompted the consideration of implementing a rechargeable battery in the product. This shift would necessitate a redesign of the product, including the incorporation of additional components like a charging module.
